Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

I was going to write "Happy" in front of it but it isn't a day to be happy about I suppose. An important day in history but one that lots of people don't really know that much about. Hell, I bet more than half of the people you know don't realize that December 7th is "the day that will live in infamy." Which is a shame because this day, more so than other days, was an important moment in our country's history, in a time that was truly fascinating, sad, brutal, and even inspirational.

Instead of going on a diatribe about the importance of the sacrifices our military has made, does make and will make, instead I'd like to share a bit of knowledge on the day Pearl Harbor was attacked, in the form of a really fascinating documentary series called Battleplan. This show is a great jumping off point into military history in general but in particular, World War II. I call it must-see for anyone who has an appreciation for what warfare is, beyond sad and violent and emotional. I think it's important to know that Pearl Harbor isn't just something that happened; it wasn't a tragedy with purely sinister purpose. It was a calculated move in a war full of brilliant and foolish maneuvers. Japan did what it did, not out of spite, but wartime necessity. It's important to understand not only what happened, but why it happened, and what followed. What Japan did was a gambit, and history has shown that it did not pay off, due to lack of appreciate for the changing face of technological warfare and the distinct lack of a well-organized exit strategy. This doc also has Israel's pre-emptive strike in the Six Day War.
