There's so much to say I don't even know where to start.
On top of there being so many ways to handle a situation, it looks like there are odds that it may or may not work on top of all of that.
It's funny, on Kotaku they just released an article sort of asking where all the truly "next gen" games are. Like not just the one's that might look pretty, but games that are changing the rules of gaming through methods only a modern console could provide. This is about the be the next game on that very short list.
Also, I don't think that is a pass/fail random generation, I think they are not showing the part where you pursue the other dialogue options first. I think the talking him down part is something you have to build up to instead of just going for.
